WHAT IS A GUARDIAN HOME?

We believe in breeding family raised smooth fox terriers who are a part of our family. By becoming a guardian home for one of our future breeding females or males you are supporting an ethical way of breeding dogs instead kennel raised dogs. As a guardian home, we will give you a dog that will grow up in your home, be a part of your family and live its entire life with you. The dog will be YOUR dog.

The PROS

Untitled-1 copy.jpg
  • no cost to purchase the dog usually $4000-4500

  • the dog lives its entire life with you from a puppy or young dog

  • we do not get involved in day-to-day decisions such as where you take your dog, exercise, diet etc this is up to you as they will be your dog. This doesn't mean you can breed your dog as breeding rights still belong to the breeder.

  • for a female, after having a maximum of 2 litters, she will be desexed and this means no more periods and you can get back to enjoying your pet and they will live the rest of their days with you.

  • you will have the 'cream of the crop' or 'pick of the litter' that we have hand-selected to preserve the breed and continue our line.

  • we will work with you and fit in with you. This means we can drive to and from vet appointments, pick her up and drop her off for breeding. We want the experience to be as easy as possible for you and to fit in with your life.

The CONS

  • We pick the dog for you as it will be one of our puppies selected for breeding

  • If you have a male it will remain intact for the duration of its life.

  • A time will need to be arranged to organise semen collection from your dog and once off health testing at a vet.

  • If you have a female, she will also be entire and this means dealing with heat cycles and blood! We can offer support and advice during this time.

  • You are responsible for ensuring no accidental matings occur whilst the dog is on their heat. This means taking reasonable action to prevent accidental matings such as keeping the dog on lead if on walks during their heat cycle and ensuring they cannot escape their yard.

  • For a female, she will have a maximum of two litters and this means she will have to go back to the breeder potentially 2 times for about 2 1/2 months to raise puppies.

  • For a female she will also need to go back during her heat for mating as well as have relevant health testing done at a vet. (all of these vet costs including any complications of birthing are covered entirely by us, the breeder).

  • The ownership paperwork will have the breeders name on it and remain in their name if male, if it is a female it will be transferred into your name after she has her two litters. Microchip details will be transferred to you upon receiving the dog and the dog will be registered with your name and address.

Our past guardian home participants can provide more information on the process and their experience working with us. To get in contact with them, please send us an email and we can give you their details.

We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to own a smooth fox terrier. The Guardian Home program makes it possible for everyone to afford a smooth fox terrier, without paying a huge price tag.
