Training videos

The basics of positive and negative reinforcement

Key points to take away from this video:
- Age-appropriate training
- Mark the bad behavior with a clap or 'uh oh' and the positive behavior with a 'Yes'
- How to redirect a bad behavior to a positive one

Crate training 101

Key points to take away from this video:
- The crate is a safe happy place to be not to be used for punishment
- Start with leaving the door open then progress to closing the door

- Put the crate in a place where you can be around the crate

- Slowly build up the time your puppy stays in the crate

- If the puppy wines and cries don't let them out as this will encourage them to wine and cry more.
- Wait until the puppy is quiet and settled in their crate for 5 minutes before letting them out again.

* Some dogs take longer to settle than others. Ensure they have been to the toilet and have access to water before putting them in their crate

Loose leash walking

Key points to take away from this video:
- Training with negative reinforcement on walks should begin after 6 months of age
- With young puppies, the focus should be on teaching the correct behavior and ignoring the bad.

- Use a two lead system with one attached to the collar and another attached to a gentle leader head harness.

STEPS TO A CORRECTION

1. Mark the pulling 'uh oh'

2. Give the correction with a leash pull

3. Go in the opposite direction

4. Continue on the walk and remember to mark 'Yes' being by your side and not pulling

Setting boundaries - no go areas & waiting at doors

Key points to take away from this video:
- Start training as early as possible

- Be in a position to stop the dog and correct them immediately as they cross the no-go line

- Build up the time they don't cross and reward them with treats

- Ensure 100% consistency between other family members

The 'Quiet' command

Key points to take away from this video:
- Start by saying 'Quiet' and waiting until the dog stops barking then reward after a 10 second break in barking
- Repeat the command and reward when they stop barking
- If they do not stop give them a negative correction or interrupt their focus with a 'touch'
- Alternatively, if this does not work you can put them away after they do not stop barking and only let them out after they have stopped barking for 5-10 minutes and are calm.
- Every dog is different and some will respond well to the touch technique, others respond best to being put away from the stimulus so they can calm down.
