History of the Smooth Fox Terrier
Smooth Fox Terriers were once considered the same breed as Wire Fox Terriers before becoming recognized as a distinctive breed. Smooth Fox Terriers are direct ancestors of Old English Terriers, Smooth-Coated Black and Tan Terrier, Bull Terrier, Greyhound, and Beagles. The Smooth Fox Terrier originates from England, where they are primarily used for hunting vermin and foxes. Smooth Fox Terriers would enter burrows and flush out foxes in a practice called ‘bolting.’
During the 1980s, Smooth Fox Terriers gained popularity for their low maintenance, snuggly personalities, and great nature with kids. Today, however, there are less than 300 litter registrations with the American Kennel Club worldwide each year, putting the breed on the vulnerable breeds list.
